[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: Hanna's Theme
ARTIST: Chemical Brothers
ALBUM: Hanna Original Soundtrack (2011) ...

haven’t seen the movie yet, but i’ll say one thing: when it comes to movie music, joe wright knows how to pick em. first person to make/find a mind-blowing chemical bros vs. dario marianelli mashup gets 1000 music points, redeemable for my admiration. -d

Best of 2010: The Tracks (Part 1)

it’s time. i’ve copped out for long enough. i was too daunted by my best album list to limit my picks to a top ten, much less put them in any sort of order. so this time, not only am i sticking to 20 tracks, i’m numbering them. am i going to regret this? most likely. here we go. (note: clicking the song title will take you to original post for the track.)

20. PILGRIM’S PROGRESS‘/MENOMENA
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
just another record store day release. wasn’t even on the album. don’t care. loved it.

19. angel dance‘/robert plant
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
feel like this album got passed over on most of the end-of-the-year lists, mine included. not sure why. while this was by far the standout track, i loved pretty much everything on it. hmm. i think i may have made a mistake.

18. in the hall of the mountain king‘/trent reznor and atticus ross
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
now that it’s oscar season, there’s a ton of hype circulating about this movie. not nearly enough of it is directed toward the soundtrack. dark and exclusively electronic, it absolutely made the movie for me, with this track — and this scene — being the best parts of each.

17. chase scene ‘/broken social scene
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
a fuzzy, frenetic electronic romp with strings and surf guitars. the perfect track to sum a brilliantly bi-polar album.

16. further‘/chemical brothers
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
it’s big, it’s bright, it soars over your head and lifts you up to take you along with it. not quite the MO we’ve come to expect from the grandfathers of electronic music, and yet here we are. and i, for one, am happy to be here.

15. the ring‘/jamie lidell
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
this is jamie’s attempt to reconcile his 2 alter egos — the groovy soulster and the edgy MC. i hope he’s as happy as i am with the results.

14. love makes you happy (when it’s not making you sad)‘/rafter
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
i’ll say it again - probably the most fun album of the year. picking a single track off it seems arbitrary at best. ultimately i picked this one because it shows their commitment to their music, and their willingness to follow a song wherever it takes them. whatever that means.

13. cristina‘/seu jorge and almaz
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
another album i probably should have put on my list. crap.

12. ransom man‘/delta spirit
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
beautiful track. this album kind of flew under the radar. then again, i guess ‘ode to sunshine’ did, too. you know what, good for them. leave taylor swift for the swine. keeps the pearls shiny for the rest of us.

11. cold war‘/janelle monae
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
this album, on the other hand, got loads of attention, and deserved every drop of it. she and big boi have quite a thing going, and while i would have liked a bit more of the drama that ‘metropolis’ had to offer, this is so far above the rest of the hip-hop world, i’m going to shut up and gratefully take it.

#10 - #1 coming in a bit…
