[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: Bit Rate Variations in B-Flat (Girl)
ARTIST: Beck
ALBUM: Hell Yes EP (2005) ...

to commemorate opening night of blip festival 2011, my favorite 8bit remix of all time. -d

*blip festival is an all 8bit new york city music festival. if, like me, you’re stuck on the west coast this weekend, dailymotion is streaming a good chunk of the performances. as always, i’d recommend checking out animaniguchi.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: Helix Nebula
ARTIST: Anamanaguchi
ALBUM: Power Supply EP (2006) ...

by their own admission, anamanaguchi makes “loud, fast music with a hacked NES from 1985”. what sets them apart from most of the rest of the chiptune world (and where their modesty sells them way short) is that they actually write super catchy poppunk tunes that just happen to be primarily 8bit. most chip music is about the sounds. this stuff is actually music. and damn good music at that. -d

*the album link above is a FREE DOWNLOAD from 8bitpeoples. and that link there will take you to their main site, where you can download tons of free (and often sweet) 8bit tunes.

*also, in another credit to their mastery of the genre, anamanaguchi got picked to score the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World video game, a similarly sweet, similarly 8bit adventure, based on edgar wright’s new movie, which also rules, which was based on a graphic novel series, which i haven’t read, but which i assume must also rule in similar fashion.

*and finally, these guys are playing a free, outdoor show in LA, next wednesday, august 25. here are the details. i’m going. so are you.
