TRACK: Single Ladies in Mayberry [Beyonce v. Andy Griffith]i know, it’s old. and not vintage old. last season old. i don’t care. i’ve attempted mashups in the past, and failed gloriously. they are hard. and this is wondrous. i will whistle it all wheekend.-d

TRACK: Una Linea de Luztoday is cinco de mayo and luce’s birthday. on the same day! it only happens once every 7 years. best to celebrate. probably with a mexican dance party featuring only songs that have the word luz in it. -d

TRACK: Belles! Belles! Belles!wanted to post something french in honor of our performance of ‘the scarlet pimpernel’ this weekend. i decided on this one b/c it represents a huge hole in my music knowledge where international music history should be. i’ll be honest: before i dj’ed my little brother’s wedding, i had never heard of claude françois. but my brother’s wife (who is french) requested it, and as soon as i put it on, the place went nuts. and not just the french people. apparently i’m the only person in the world who didn’t know this song. typical.

TRACK: Singing in the Rain (Remix)it’s yesterday, LA marathon, somewhere in west hollywood, about mile 16 or so. with each passing minute, it somehow manages to rain harder than it did the minute before. we’re all soaked to the skin, muscles cold and cramping, and there’s a long way to go yet. the spectators are trying their best to cheer us up, but orange slices, peanut butter pretzels and vague, disintegrating signs only go so far. then, from a apartment window high above santa monica blvd, this song begins to play. well, not the remix, the original. we all look up, then at one another, and for a second everybody is smiling. it wasn’t much, but in a race as demoralizing as the monsoon marathon was at times, it was a weird moment of grace, endowed by the circumstances with all sorts of power and importance. and just one in a string of connected, utterly essential moments that carried us from mark to mark til we got where we were going. it’s stupid, but i think fewer people would have crossed the finish line without it. music. -d

TRACK: Disque Oh!just a superb day. manic, but excellent. like this song. -d
*this song is also fun b/c if you 1) use a mac, 2) use the default Mail program, and 3) use the default sound set in that program, this song will make you check for new mail every 5 seconds. i don’t know if it’s the exact same as the ‘new mail’ sound, but it’s pretty close.

TRACK: Broken Hearton a beautiful day like today, there’s nothing more natural than slipping into some skinny jeans and a deep v, popping on your prescriptionless plastic frames, flipping on your ironically off-brand mp3 player and finding a nice quiet venice skatepark where you can practice the jerk with your friends. hey, at least these guys own it. bring on summer. -d (thanks, lance)

TRACK: Climbing Wallsthe sun is back out today. and apparently i really missed it. i mean, one morning’s worth of extra vitamin D and suddenly i’m on the hunt for summer jams. and this was the first one to come up on the shuffle. as far as indie dance pop goes, there’s nothing terribly new happening, but who cares? for a demo release from a brand new band, it pulls its influence from all the right places (phoenix, yeasayer, passion pit, friendly fires) and does everything it should. and with any luck, by the time summer rolls around, we’ll have a full EP to jam to. -d
*you can grab this track as a free download from their website, costing you naught but that one email address you don’t mind giving out anyway.

TRACK: Napping Captainelsewhere in land of genre-bendres, this LA duo also tends to make songs that sound like they came from about 10 different bands. sometimes within the same song. like this one that starts out at newgrass night at the 930 club, then moves on to a little dance club tucked away in notting hill, and wraps up somewhere in between. plus, that first line is pretty spectacular. -d

TRACK: Something Good Can Work (The Twelves Remix)it’s weird. i didn’t actually like the two door cinema club album that came out last year. but i have loved almost every remix i’ve heard them do of other people’s songs, and i’ve loved almost every remix i’ve heard other people do of their songs. especially this one. also, i’m thinking i should probably dedicate an entire week to these kitsune compilations. i think this is my 4th kitsune post or something… -d

TRACK: Once and for Alla great friend and loyal moosico listener is set to give birth in the next couple of days. today, she found herself in need of some ‘get this baby out of me’ music. and while i’ve never been pregnant, i assume that the way i’m feeling today — sort of a ‘it’s friday and tomorrow i’m going to disneyland and i don’t want to be at work anymore’ kind of feeling — is pretty much the same thing. i think this song works for both of us. come on li’l Gomez! -d
