[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: The Sun
ARTIST: The Naked and Famous
ALBUM: Passive Me, Aggressive You (March 15, 2011) ...

not quite what i had in mind when i typed ‘sun’ into the iTunes search bar, but man what a track. so dark, so ironious. the whole album is actually really interesting. epic and synthy like so many others, but with a hint of Reznorian creepiness bubbling just beneath the surface. the album isn’t due out for another week or so, but they’ve got loads of great stuff floating around the web to keep you busy till it’s out, including singles, videos, a tumblog and a soundcloud page with some sweet remixes. not bad for a band who has yet to release their debut LP. -d

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: Climbing Walls
ARTIST: Strange Talk
ALBUM: Demo Single (2010) ...

the sun is back out today. and apparently i really missed it. i mean, one morning’s worth of extra vitamin D and suddenly i’m on the hunt for summer jams. and this was the first one to come up on the shuffle. as far as indie dance pop goes, there’s nothing terribly new happening, but who cares? for a demo release from a brand new band, it pulls its influence from all the right places (phoenix, yeasayer, passion pit, friendly fires) and does everything it should. and with any luck, by the time summer rolls around, we’ll have a full EP to jam to. -d

*you can grab this track as a free download from their website, costing you naught but that one email address you don’t mind giving out anyway.

ARTIST: Elite Gymnastics
ALBUM: Neu! '92 EP (2011) ...

an interesting song for an interesting day. this track from the minneapolis chillwave (zing) duo plays out with plenty of energy, but still manages to leave a decidedly pensive taste on the tongue. perfect music for that kind of deep thinking that can only be done on a long bike ride. -d (thanks for tip, rob)

*the full EP, plus a bunch of other stuff, is available for free download on their website.

or this one. which starts out as an acoustic phish jam and ends up glitched out of its brains. i want this song played at the dance party that follows my funeral. -d

elsewhere in land of genre-bendres, this LA duo also tends to make songs that sound like they came from about 10 different bands. sometimes within the same song. like this one that starts out at newgrass night at the 930 club, then moves on to a little dance club tucked away in notting hill, and wraps up somewhere in between. plus, that first line is pretty spectacular. -d

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: Pissing on Bonfires/Kissing with Tongues
ARTIST: Meursault
ALBUM: Pissing on Bonfires/Kissing with Tongues (2010) ...

been listening to these guys a lot lately. i think the initial appeal came from presence of more than a little frightened rabbit in here. (and it’s not just the accent. he’s got that same plaintive yearn lodged somewhere between his heart and his larynx.) but their influence reaches well beyond the basic guitars and drums of scott and friends. there’s some shoegaze fuzz, plenty of electronics, even a banjo from time to time. i mean, it’s really interesting stuff. one of those bands you can’t really get a grasp on with just one song…

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: Something Good Can Work (The Twelves Remix)
ARTIST: Two Door Cinema Club
ALBUM: Kitsuné Maison Compilation 9 (2010) ...

it’s weird. i didn’t actually like the two door cinema club album that came out last year. but i have loved almost every remix i’ve heard them do of other people’s songs, and i’ve loved almost every remix i’ve heard other people do of their songs. especially this one. also, i’m thinking i should probably dedicate an entire week to these kitsune compilations. i think this is my 4th kitsune post or something… -d

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: Wait for the Summer (Live)
ARTIST: Yeasayer
ALBUM: Live At Ancienne Belgique (2011) ...

i love it when people recommend songs for moosico. for 2 reasons: 1) it means they like the song so much that they have to do something about it. i love feeling that way about a song. it’s the whole reason i started this dumb blog in the first place. and 2) it means they like me — or at least the blog — or at least the musical taste reflected on the blog — so much that they choose me to share the song with. it just involves so many nice feelings. today’s song was recommended by melmo, whose birthday it is today. and like most of the people i like the most, the music we share with each other is at the heart of our friendship. so in honor of that lovely exchange, i’m finally putting a soundcloud link on the blog. (it’s the little orange one up there to the right.) it’s super simple. if you’ve got a song that you think would make a great song of the day, click there and stick it in my soundcloud dropbox. bam. let the love flow. -d

*this live yeasayer album totally awesome. it’s available on their website using the ‘name your price’ system. and yes, $0.00 is an option. cheapskate.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: Flames
ARTIST: Karl x Johan
ALBUM: Single (2011) ...

oh don’t worry, it’s only epic swedish electro-pop built on an ennio morricone sample, nbd. this is the debut release both for karl x johan (which apparently represents the coming together of two scandinavian pop powerhouses) but also for Emotion, a new indie label out of stockholm. obviously there’s nothing terribly new happening here, but the sample still sounds good. plus it came with the macro-est music video of all time. which, while being a little kitschy, is a little cool also. -d

*watching that video again, i’ve decided it kind of looks like a bunch of cover girl, fruit of the loom and gillette commercials all cut together.

ARTIST: Flight Facilities
ALBUM: Kitsuné Maison Compilation 10: The Fireworks Issue (2010) ...

it’s been a long week. i’m closing it out with something nice and easy. this is the first original track composed by flight facilities, who appear to be an anonymous indie dj duo of dubious origin. apparently it’s getting a lot of airplay in australia, i don’t really know, i’m kind of over scouring their wikipedia page for interesting tidbits. it’s a fun song. that should be enough copy to merit a listen. let’s get this weekend thing going already. sheesh. -d

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: I Never Learnt to Share
ARTIST: James Blake
ALBUM: James Blake (2011) ...

so far this year, no artist has gotten more hype than james blake. he is on basically every list of 2011 up-and-comers. everybody from kcrw to the bbc seems to be completely enamored of him. so when i went the emusic to check things out, i was expecting something relatively accessible. something unique and cool sounding, but also palatable to a reasonably general audience. what i heard instead was actually unlike anything i’d ever heard before. i still don’t really even know how to describe it. at its most basic it’s probably dubstep, but it’s layered with these quasi melodies and crazy harmonies that sound more like zapped out R&B. it’s awesome but it’s totally avant garde. and to be honest, i can’t believe that so many major media outlets are lining up to love this. i mean, it’s easy for me to love, i don’t have to market this madness. but even if you’re a jaded exec you can’t really deny there’s something pretty brilliant happening here, and all i can say is ups to the big boys for having the grapes to get behind it. -d

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: Once and for All
ARTIST: Clock Opera
ALBUM: Once and for All [Single] (2011) ...

a great friend and loyal moosico listener is set to give birth in the next couple of days. today, she found herself in need of some ‘get this baby out of me’ music. and while i’ve never been pregnant, i assume that the way i’m feeling today — sort of a ‘it’s friday and tomorrow i’m going to disneyland and i don’t want to be at work anymore’ kind of feeling — is pretty much the same thing. i think this song works for both of us. come on li’l Gomez! -d

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] TRACK: Mine Is Yours [Passion Pit remix]
ARTIST: Cold War Kids
ALBUM: Mine is Yours (2011) ...

i really like it when bands i really like take songs i sort of like by bands i sort of like and remix them into songs i really like. like this. on a side note, the new cold war kids album that just came out yesterday is just ok. it’s a little more straightforward, a little more radio ready than their previous stuff, which works to their advantage on some tracks but leaves the album as a whole sort of floundering with 100 other bands in the middling alt-rock mire. -d (via RCRDLBL)
